Mo-Emét Preparing to Plant

Mo-Emét, with whose family my research team ate our meals, is here sharpening the end of a pole in order to use it as a dibble stick in planting. The photo shows what a swidden looks like after the large trees are felled and the underbrush slashed and burned so that it is ready for planting. It is quite a contrast to a cleanly plowed and harrowed farm field! (See Chapter 5)
