About Stuart A. Schlegel


STUART A. SCHLEGEL is a cultural anthropologist and specialist on the Philippines and Indonesia. His primary research has been with the Teduray people (formerly known in English as the Tiruray), an isolated rainforest tribe of southwestern Mindanao among whom, in their forest and peasant forms, he lived for more than five years . He is the author of many books and articles. On the Teduray, his books include: Tiruray Justice: Traditional Tiruray Morality and Law; Tiruray Subsistence: From Shifting Cultivation to Plow Agriculture; Tiruray-English Lexicon; and Children of Tulus: Essays on the Tiruray People. In 2002, the Anthropological Association of the Philippines honored Stu for his lifetime of research. The commendation read: "In gratitude for the rigor and reverence that have characterized his contribution toward a deeper understanding of Mindanao society, history, and culture."

Stu was a missionary to the Philippine Episcopal Church on the island of Mindanao in the early 1960s, working among the Teduray as a parish priest and as the founding principal of St. Francis High School. Wishing a different relationship to the area and its people, he returned to the U.S in 1963 and studied anthropology at the University of Chicago, where was he affiliated with the Philippine Studies Program, receiving his Ph.D. in 1969. His dissertation was based on research within the Teduray's rainforest in 1966 and 1967. Since then he has been on the faculty of the University of California, Santa Cruz, becoming Professor Emeritus of Anthropology in 1988. He was Visiting Professor of Anthropology at the University of Wisconsin in 1975 and 1976, when he was on the staff of the Indonesian Institute. Professor Schlegel is in demand as a speaker and storyteller and his talks and slide shows on the Teduray have generated great interest and a passionate response. He is active in peace and justice work, is an avid supporter of non-violence and legal reform, and is frequently invitfrequently invited to lecture, lead workshops on intercultural.

Stu has been married to Audrey Stier Schlegel for over 40 years, and they had two sons, Leonard and William. Stu was married to Audrey Stier Schlegel for over 50 years, and they had two sons: Leonard and William. Leonard died in 1993, William in 1999, and Audrey in 2011.
