Balaud was a widely renowned legal sage, known for wisdom and good judgment. His first wife is the younger woman shown here on his left; his second wife, on his right, came to him through a process of spouse replacement when her husband (Balaud's brother) died. When I took this picture, Balaud ran and got his kris; he said he felt more "formally dressed" with it, even though such practice is more Maguindanaon than Teduray! (See Chapter 7)
